Ways to Connect with Other Families
Families and caregivers of children with special needs often start on their life journey with a lot of questions. Whether your child’s special needs started at birth, were identified as they grew, or were the result of an unexpected event, it is helpful to hear from other parents and caregivers who have had similar experiences.
Finding Your People: Connecting with Other Families
Other parents and caregivers can be incredible guides and resources. There are many different ways for people to connect--meeting one-on-one for coffee, joining groups, attending community events, or trying an online chat. These connections can provide comfort and help parents and caregivers know they are not alone.
It is important to remember that everyone is unique and has different personalities, needs, and comfort levels—so it may take time to find others who you want to be a part of your special needs community. There are many groups to choose from, and trying different groups is normal. Exploring a variety of communities can help you discover where you feel most supported and most comfortable.
The beauty is—there are so many ways to connect. When you find your people, you’ll know. Building relationships with others who truly “get it” can be one of the most powerful resources on this journey.
