Supplemental Security Income

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) helps families with limited income and resources if they have a child who is blind or disabled.

• SSI provides financial support for a child from birth to age 18. The child cannot be married or considered the head of the household.
• In Rhode Island, if determined eligible for SSI, you will receive information about your Medicaid enrollment along with the SSI award letter that you get.
• Anyone older than 18 must meet the eligibility criteria for adults in order to be eligible for Medicaid coverage.

Each Social Security program has its own eligibility requirements and rules, so it’s important to check if your child is eligible. Use the online eligibility checker on the Social Security Administration (SSA) website or contact your local SSA office with questions. 

SSI State Supplemental Payment (SSP)

The Rhode Island  SSI State Supplemental Payment (SSP) provides an additional small payment to help pay for living expenses to:

• Rhode Islanders who already receive SSI;
• Some non-SSI recipients who are determined to be low-income;
• People with disabilities; and
• Older adults with limited resources.
